Manual Lymphatic Drainage for Cosmetic Surgery Patients

Manual Lymphatic Drainage or MLD has become widely accepted by the medical community, largely due to research studies. In a study conducted by Laurie Casas, M.D., and Patricia Depoli, M.D., the question of whether or not MLD produces significant outcomes for cosmetic surgery patients was answered.

The study represented 13 different cosmetic surgery procedures. Half the group was given MLD and the other half was not. The evidence points to this conclusion, the authors noted: “We see complete resolution of postoperative edema, bruising and fibrosis within 9-18 months in non-MLD patients. Those given MLD healed within six weeks to three months, significantly shortening postoperative recovery.”

Benefits of manual lymphatic drainage for cosmetic surgery patients

  • Bruising reduction. Cells transported by the lymph system are moved away up to 20 times faster with MLD. Bruises heal in a fraction of the time, allowing clients the ability to resume activities of daily living, without having to wear sunglasses for months to hide bruises.
  • Edema reduction. MLD reroutes lymph fluid to collateral and viable pathways untouched by surgery to allow for accelerated drainage, as opposed to the slow trickle of tissue fluids in the operative site.
  • Pain management. As pressure of lymph fluid decreases around nerves, pain and discomfort are relieved and require less pain medication.
  • Scar-tissue prevention and fibrosis reduction. Lymph fluid left to build up below incisions or sitting in interstitial space can solidify, causing the formation of scar tissue and fibrotic tissue. These tissues are often felt as ball-like substances below the skin surface. MLD prevents lymph fluid build up and solidification, for a seamless scar.

With all the benefits of manual lymphatic drainage for cosmetic surgery patients, it’s understandable why the modality is growing in interest from surgeons. The typical side effects of post-op surgery can be significantly reduced with MLD, minimizing downtime and discomfort.

“The surgical patient, in particular, benefits largely from manual lymphatic drainage,” says cosmetic surgeon Bart Rademaker, M.D. “In these situations, the normal homeostasis is upset through anesthesia or tissue injury, and the normal channels to remove excessive toxins or waste are overwhelmed.

“Effective manual lymphatic drainage definitely improves surgical outcomes and speed of recovery,” he adds.

What’s more, it is all natural and with no side effects.

Body Contouring FAQ

Body contouring, or body sculpting, is an umbrella term for any cosmetic treatment that helps contour the body to look a certain way. Much of the time, cosmetic body sculpting is done by removing unwanted fat, skin, and cellulite from the body through an assortment of high-tech methods. These methods can be surgical, minimally invasive, or noninvasive.

Why use body contouring?

Body sculpting is often used to address problems that regular lifestyle habits, such as diet and exercise, cannot change. For many of us, there are several roadblocks that can get in the way of losing the weight we want where we want.

Hormones, aging, and genetic predisposition are all factors for why undesired fat refuses to budge from the neck, arms, tummy, buttocks, and thighs. With body contouring, you can make your hard work tell and make it easier to maintain the shape you want.

Benefits of Body Sculpting

Getting the body you want and finally getting out of the gym are not the only benefits for this type of treatment. In fact, there are many benefits that you might not have considered, like:

  • Saving time
  • Minimizing the frustration you feel about your body
  • Boosting your self-esteem

For most patients, these are enough benefits to take the plunge and begin cosmetic treatments. Here are some other benefits of body contouring:

Improve Stubborn Areas

There are places on every body where fat and cellulite refuse to go away. It happens to everyone. Its very common for women to store stubborn fat on their hips, thighs, and abdomen, especially as the effects of aging and hormonal changes begin to set in.

It seems like those stubborn areas never go away no matter how many squats and crunches you do, and that can be discouraging. Body sculpting treatments easily improve those stubborn areas in a matter of weeks or months.

No matter where your stubborn area is, these treatments are all effective at removing unwanted fat from your body and perfecting your body shape. These treatments can also smooth out stubborn cellulite and tighten skin laxity on the body that refuses to tone up.

Safe Techniques

Body sculpting treatments are very safe techniques. The treatments at our office have all gone through rigorous clinical testing and FDA approval. Much of the time, these techniques are far safer than crash diets or taking iffy supplements that promise to boost your metabolism.

Cosmetic treatments to sculpt the body are often completed on the surface of the skin to encourage the bodys natural regenerative abilities, so these treatments are natural and safe.

Long-Lasting Results

While diet and exercise are obviously good lifestyle habits to have for the sake of your health, it is often the case that the body reaches a plateau at some point. These plateaus can mean that your lifestyle habits are no longer effective or that your body is quicker to backslide to where you started, and that means that the results you worked so hard for might not last for long

Body sculpting treatments are different. Because of the techniques and technology that is used to contour the body, cosmetic treatments for the body usually have reliably longlasting results. When performed by a skilled hand and combined with a healthy lifestyle, body sculpting treatments can last for several months to even years at a time.

Do I need to keep getting body contouring treatments to maintain my results?

Once you complete your body contouring procedure(s), you don’t need to get any more treatments to maintain your results. However, its still possible for you to gain back the fat that was removed, so you do need to keep up with a healthy diet and exercise routine to continue enjoying your results.
