Your lymphatic system helps eliminate your body’s waste. A healthy, active lymphatic system does this naturally through the movements of smooth muscle tissue.
However, surgery, medical conditions, or trauma to the body can cause fluids and lymph to build up in your lymphatic system and your lymph nodes, a condition called lymphedema.
If you’ve ever had surgery and had lymph nodes removed, your doctor may have suggested lymphatic drainage massage performed by either a massage therapist or physical therapist.
Surgical procedures that affect or remove lymph nodes can cause lymphedema as a side effect.
Lymphedema will only occur in the area near the surgical site. For example, if you have lymph nodes removed as part of breast cancer treatment to your left breast, only your left arm, not your right arm could develop lymphedema. If you develop lymphedema, you’ll feel fluid build-up which feels very uncomfortable and painful. It feels heavy to clients, and in some instances can affect your mobility, especially if it presents itself in your legs.
Lymphatic massage works by moving waste products away from the damaged area, by using light and gentle strokes, in a repetitive manner. If you’ve undergone surgery to treat cancer and had lymph nodes removed, ask your doctor if lymphatic drainage would help.
